Best Flat Roof Waterproofing Materials & Coverings (UK)

There are many flat roof materials to choose from and the options continue to increase. Some materials are suitable for new build projects while others are best for refurbishing.

New roofing systems are appearing on a regular basis to meet the demands of clients. More are now looking to materials that are friendly to the environment and energy efficient. Some look for systems that are cost effective, others for longevity.

Flat Roof Materials

Flat roofs are one of the many common roof types which are growing in popularity across the UK. Below are some of the top flat roof materials in use currently. We will also add the advantages and disadvantages of each roofing system. We will also talk about lifespan and pricing to help you make your choice.

Liquid Flat Roofing Materials

Liquid flat roofing is a method which is quickly growing in popularity. There are more manufacturers such as Trilfex, Proteus and Kemper Systems that offer liquid systems now. This type of system usually lasts for 15-  25 years. The installation involves applying a liquid coating direct to the roof deck.

A liquid waterproofing system is both durable and long lasting. It’ s not as cheap as some flat roof systems but it´s quick to install and can also cover your existing roof surface. Any leaky surface will return to watertight almost instantly after first application. Liquid usually only takes between 12-24 hours to dry making it one of the quickest methods to reseal your roof.

One of the biggest advantages of a liquid system is it’s 100% cold apply. This means there is no need for torches or other hot-works for installation. As it´s liquid form, it´s also ideal for the most complicated roof designs. Some materials will expand and contract during extreme conditions. This is not the case with liquid systems which will fix itself to every contour of your roof or whatever other surface that requires waterproofing.

ARBOFLEX PU Liquid Waterproofing

ARBOFLEX PU Liquid Waterproofing is a single-component, pure polyurethane-based liquid waterproofing system designed for durability and ease of use. Once applied and cured, it forms a seamless, elastic membrane that is both airtight and waterproof, with a life expectancy of 25 years.

Triflex Flat Roof Liquid Systems

Triflex offers a range of cold-applied liquid roofing systems, primarily based on advanced polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) technology, though they also use polyurethane (PU), epoxy (EP), and polyurea (PUA) for specific applications. These systems are designed for waterproofing flat roofs, balconies, walkways, car parks, and intricate details, providing seamless, durable, and flexible solutions for both new builds and refurbishments. Unlike traditional sheet membranes or hot-applied materials, Triflex systems are applied as a liquid (usually with a roller or brush) and cure chemically to form a tough, elastic membrane. Key features include rapid curing—rainproof in as little as 30 minutes and fully trafficable in about 45 minutes, even at temperatures as low as -5°C. This makes them ideal for projects needing quick turnaround or year-round installation without hot works, reducing fire risks and disruption. They’re highly compatible, adhering to over 90% of existing roofing substrates like single-ply (e.g., PVC, EPDM), bitumen, asphalt, concrete, and metal, often eliminating the need to strip old membranes. Coverage typically requires 3.0 kg/m² for a fully reinforced system, with a fleece layer embedded for added strength and crack-bridging ability. Triflex systems, such as Triflex ProTect, are BBA- and ETA-certified, hydrolysis-resistant (meaning they withstand standing water), and UV-stable, offering a service life exceeding 25 years. They’re versatile enough for warm roofs, inverted roofs, green roofs, and zero-pitch designs, with options for colored finishes or non-slip textures. Drying times vary slightly by product, but ProTect, for example, is overcoat-ready in about an hour. Available in various kit sizes, it’s a go-to for complex roofs with penetrations or where aesthetics matter.

Felt

Felt as a flat roofing material is one of the oldest and still one of the cheapest options. It’s common to find felt on all types of roofs including garden sheds and other outdoor roof surfaces.

Felt usually contains up to three layers on flat roofs which you apply with a torch. This material is better for smaller roof surfaces as a rule of thumb. One of the great benefits is this material is quite simple to repair. Felt roofs also have a decent lifespan of up to 30 years. The price of felt is usually far less than other materials such a rubber roofing and fibre glass.
